Three hikers had to be rescued from California’s Mount Shasta after using Google Gemini to help plan their climb. According to local authorities, the AI advised them to bring significantly less food and water than they needed.
The group began their ascent early in the morning and reached the 14,179-foot (4,322-meter) summit at around 7 p.m., well after the recommended turnaround time. They then became lost during the descent, with one hiker suffering a knee injury, and spent the night in difficult terrain before being rescued.
The local sheriff’s office warned hikers not to rely solely on AI for trip planning and recommended contacting the Mount Shasta ranger station beforehand for accurate, up-to-date information. The incident highlights the risks of using AI for safety-critical outdoor activities.
