Apple used videos of YouTube stars to train AI without permission

Big tech giants like Apple used YouTube subtitles from more than 170,000 videos to train their artificial intelligence models without the creators’ consent, according to a new report.

The non-profit organization EleutherAI downloaded these subtitles and added them to its database called “The Pile”. Companies like Apple, Nvidia, and Salesforce used this dataset to train their AI models, despite YouTube’s rules on unauthorized data collection.

These well-known creators include Marquees Brownlee, MrBeast, PewDiePie and late night TV show host Stephen Colbert.
