Apple has acquired Sonera, a company developing chip-based magnetic sensing technology, according to filings required under the EU’s Digital Markets Act.
Sonera’s technology can non-invasively measure magnetic fields generated by the body, including signals linked to neural and muscle activity. The company says its approach could eventually make brain activity easier to measure and enable new health, movement and wearable experiences.
Sonera previously developed an S1 chip designed to enable a new class of wearables based on muscle activity. Apple has not disclosed how it plans to use the technology, but the acquisition could support future innovations in health-focused wearables and AI-powered devices.
