The US Department of Energy (DOE) has launched a $30 million AI4IX program to speed up connecting new energy projects to the grid using artificial intelligence. The initiative aims to reduce delays in the interconnection process, which currently takes up to seven years, holding up 2,600 gigawatts of clean energy projects like solar, wind and batteries.
AI could streamline labor-intensive reviews by identifying incomplete applications and improving communication with developers. Over 94% of pending projects are carbon-free, reflecting a shift toward renewable energy.
The program, funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, is accepting proposals through January 2025, with winners announced that winter. Rising electricity demand, partly driven by AI data centers, makes faster grid connections critical for meeting future energy needs.
