Cyber security firm Home Security Heroes recently released a study on artificial intelligence and password cracking. A new AI-powered password cracking app called PassGAN was investigated.
The study ran a list of more than 15 million passwords using the PassGAN application. The results showed that 51 percent of common passwords can be cracked in less than a minute, 65 percent in less than an hour, 71 percent in less than a day, and 81 percent in less than a month.
According to the study, almost any password with six characters or less was instantly cracked. According to the study, passwords longer than 18 characters proved to be safe. It took the PassGAN tool at least ten months to figure out an 18-digit, numeric-only password.
To better protect accounts, it is recommended to use passwords of at least 15 characters. These passwords should also contain at least two letters, numbers, and symbols. It is also important to avoid patterns such as “1234”. You should also change your passwords regularly and avoid using the same password on other accounts.
Although it can be a bit of a hassle, sticking to strong passwords can help keep your data safe. And if you’re worried about forgetting your password, you can always use a password manager.
