Last week, Google introduced a new online store feature that uses artificial intelligence to help users search for clothes in more detail and better visualize them.
Google Shopping users in the US can now access a virtual try-on experience that realistically shows how the garment will look on the chosen model. Models are available in a variety of skin tones, ethnicities, hair types and body shapes, ranging in size from XXS to 4XL.
Initially, only women’s tops from brands such as H&M, Anthropologie, Everlane and Loft will be available for virtual try-on. Men’s clothing will be available later this year. The feature is designed to help shoppers avoid disappointment by visualizing exactly what an item of clothing will look like before purchasing it.
The new Google virtual fitting room uses a generative AI model that is trained by adding random pixels to an image, which the AI then learns to remove to create realistic images. The process allows Google’s AI model to realistically depict how a garment wrinkles, breaks, clings and stretches on different models, no matter what angle or position they are in.
According to Google, 59 percent of online shoppers are disappointed when purchasing clothing because they expect it to look different on their body and 42 percent don’t feel themselves similar to models presented online.
