In May of this year, Uber announced a multi-year strategic partnership with the robot taxi company Wyaomo. Now it has reached the point where the service started operating in the first city – Phoenix, Arizona.
Waymo, an Alphabet (Google) company, has been using autonomous vehicles in Phoenix since late 2020 with its Waymo One service. There are currently over 10,000 robot taxi rides in the area each week. Now Waymo’s driverless cars (the all-electric Jaguar I-Pace) are also available there for Uber customers.
When the car arrives, riders unlock the doors from within the Uber app. 24/7 customer support is available in the Uber app and in the vehicle. One difference is that using Waymo One always results in a driverless vehicle. The Uber app allows customers to choose either a regular or robot taxi for their ride.
Waymo One is also available in San Francisco, public testing is underway in Los Angeles, and Austin is the next city to try the service.
