In late June, a Phoenix police officer stopped an autonomous Waymo robot taxi driving in the oncoming lane because of the confusing construction signs.

The car also reportedly ran a red light before stopping at a police alert and the officer was able to speak with a Waymo support representative.

Police body camera footage showed the officer explaining that the car had entered the oncoming lane and run a red light. A Waymo representative explained that the vehicle was prevented from returning to the correct lane and traveled in the oncoming lane for about 30 seconds before pulling back into its own direction.

While Arizona law allows officials to issue fines to companies, it was deemed “not feasible” in this case. Waymo claims its cars are significantly safer than human drivers, but NHTSA is investigating the company for various incidents.
