Tesla delayed the unveiling of its fully autonomous robot taxi from August to October to allow more time for design and testing, Bloomberg reports.

Information about this delay is initially only internal to the company, it has not yet been announced to the public.

CEO Elon Musk emphasizes Tesla’s identity as an artificial intelligence and robotics company, not just a car manufacturer. Despite Musk’s long-term predictions, Tesla’s current self-driving systems still require the driver’s attention and responsibility. Meanwhile, competitors such as Waymo are already using fully autonomous robot taxis in several US cities.

Tesla’s robot taxi is described as a device purpose-built to be a self-driving car that lacks traditional controls.
