A group of US senators has introduced a new bill called the COPIED Act to make it easier to authenticate and identify AI-generated content and protect journalists and artists from having their work used by AI models without their permission.

The bill directs the Standards and Technology Agency to develop standards for proving the origin of content and identifying synthetic media, including watermarking. It also requires that AI tools for creative and journalistic content allow users to add and protect provenance information.

The bill would allow users to add information about the origin of the creation and the law would prohibit removing that information. According to the bill, such content cannot be used to train AI models either.

Content owners can sue companies that use their material without permission or in violation of authentication markers. The bill is supported by various publishing and artist groups and aims to ensure transparency and accountability of AI-generated content.
