Google has pulled its controversial “Dear Sydney” Olympics ad after backlash. The 60-second ad featured a father using the AI tool Gemini to write a fan letter to US track star Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone on behalf of his daughter, instead of writing it together.

Critics argued the ad missed the point of personal fan letters, which are meant to create genuine, heartfelt connections. Google acknowledged the negative feedback, stating the ad intended to show Gemini as a helpful tool for drafting ideas, not a replacement for human expression.

This incident highlights tech companies’ struggle to understand the emotional nuances of AI’s role in personal interactions.
