The California Senate has approved a bill that would require explicit consent to use AI-generated replicas of performers.

The bill, backed by the actors union SAG-AFTRA, expands protections to various types of performances, including video games and commercials. It aims to protect the rights of performers in the age of digital replication.

Initially, the Motion Picture Association (MPA) opposed the bill, citing post-production techniques. Now the bill was amended and it now moves on to the governor’s desk. SAG-AFTRA also supports federal legislation, including the Anti-Counterfeiting Act, to further protect against the use of unauthorized digital copies.
