OpenAI plans to release its next major model, Orion, by December, initially giving access to select partner companies instead of a wide ChatGPT rollout.

Microsoft is preparing to host Orion on Azure by November, though it’s unclear if it will be branded as GPT-5.

Orion, reportedly up to 100 times more powerful than GPT-4, is designed as a significant step toward OpenAI’s vision of artificial general intelligence (AGI). Recently trained with synthetic data from OpenAI’s o1 model, Orion’s anticipated release follows OpenAI’s historic $6.6 billion funding round and key staff changes, including the departure of CTO Mira Murati.
