Brazil’s data protection authority (ANPD) has banned Tools for Humanity, co-founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, from offering compensation for iris scans, including cryptocurrency payments, starting Saturday. The ban is a preventive measure, as the ANPD believes financial incentives could influence individuals’ consent to share biometric data.

Tools for Humanity, which leads the World project aiming to create a global identity system through iris scans, stated that its service complies with Brazilian laws and is in contact with the ANPD to address concerns. The ANPD also ordered the company to clarify who processes the collected personal data on its website.
