The University of Dundee has achieved a medical first by helping perform the world’s first robotic transatlantic thrombectomy, marking a breakthrough in remote stroke treatment. Using Sentante’s robotic system, Professor Iris Grunwald and Dr. Ricardo Hanel successfully removed a blood clot from a brain model in Scotland while operating from the US.
The system replicates a surgeon’s hand movements with real-time tactile feedback, enabling specialists to perform life-saving procedures remotely. Dundee’s Image Guided Therapy Research Facility served as the global training hub for the operation, showcasing how robotic technology could expand access to stroke care, especially in remote regions. Sentante’s system has FDA Breakthrough Device status and aims to make expert treatment available regardless of distance.
