OpenAI added a new Read Aloud function to the artificial chat assistant ChatGPT, which reads the answers to questions to the user. The feature is now available in both the ChatGPT web version and the iOS and Android ChatGPT apps.

Read Aloud can speak in 37 languages and automatically detects the language of the text being read. Competing company Anthropic recently added similar features to its AI models. Now GPT-4 and GPT-3.5 users also have these options.

ChatGPT launched a voice chat feature in September 2023 where users can directly ask the chatbot for prompts without typing. A new feature now added allows ChatGPT to read written responses aloud and users can set the chatbot to always respond verbally.

In the mobile apps, people can tap and hold text to open the Read Aloud player, where they can activate, pause or rewind the reading. In the web version, a speaker icon appears below the text.
